Picking at Scabs

Curated by Gil Rocha

at Michael and Noémi Neidorff Art Gallery at Trinity University

Statement from the Curator

This set of works are a metaphor for hereditary injuries that are passed on through stories, testimonies, tales, objects, and subtle gestures that embrace individual and generational suffering. The work is an approach towards empathy for someone else and questions “can we heal together?”. In the search to heal, this group of artists leave a testament of where the wounds began creating the pain before generating the scars. Holding on to a picturesque notion that the mistakes once made will never be repeated. Each artist offers beauty and indifference from race to the abuse of power, while emphasizing multiple sacrifices taken individually towards change, often at the cost of accepting the pain within themselves.

About Gil Rocha

Gil is an artist, educator, and curator, and his work, which incorporates painting, collage, sculpture, installation, and writing, focuses on issues related to the U.S./Mexico border. CAM PERENNIAL SELECTION PROCESS DISCLOSURE

Part of the mission of CAM is to give full authority to the selected curators. This strategy is aimed at allowing independent curators full liberty and avoiding personal conflicts, given the close-knit nature of the San Antonio arts community. To this end:

  • The CAM Board has no hand or influence in the curation, discussion, or review of the selected artists.

  • The CAM Perennial Artists selection is entirely at the discretion of the guest curator, who never confers with the CAM Board.

  • CAM board members simply compile the information that artists give in their application and share this with the curator.

  • Community partners such as local galleries, museums, and venues are not privy to or involved in the selection process of either the curator, or open call artists, and the curator's autonomy is privileged.
