CAM has engaged in a self-study to learn more about how we might better represent the diversity of San Antonio. We will use this data to direct our organization toward a more inclusive model which requires that we look at ourselves critically. We are also committed to transparently reporting the demographic data about our Volunteer Board, Perennial Curators, and Featured Perennial Artists. Below you’ll find the demographic breakdown of our Volunteer Board in terms of gender, race/ethnicity, and LGBTQ+ identification.
Demographics of Race/Ethnicity: CAM Board
The current volunteer CAM Board consists of 9 members. As you can see in the chart to the right, currently the board is comprised of 4 people who identify as Latino/a/x (44.4%), 3 people who identify as White (33.3%), and 2 people who identify as Black (22.2%). We also acknowledge that we do not currently have anyone serving on the CAM board who identifies as Asian, American Indian, Alaskan Native, or Pacific Islander. This inequity does not represent the diversity of our communities. The CAM board is aware and actively working to correct this disparity in who is nominated and selected as new board members.
Demographics of Race/Ethnicity: CAM Perennial Curators
The CAM Perennial Exhibition was held for the first time in 2012 and has hosted 10 curators in that time. As you can see in the chart to the right, 6 of those curators have been White (60%), and 4 have been Latino/a/x (40%). None of the past curators have been Black, Asian, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander. This is a glaring inequity and does not represent the diversity of our communities. The board that selects the curator is aware and actively working to correct this disparity.
Demographics of Race/Ethnicity: CAM Perennial Artists
Each year the CAM Board selects a curator who chooses artists for the Perennial Exhibition. When we look at the demographics of race/ethnicity we see that the Perennials have featured 46.3% Latino/a/X artists, 42.6% white artists, 4.8% Asian artists, 4.8% Black Artists, 1.2% American Indian or Alaskan Native, 1.2% that preferred not to answer and we have never featured an artist who identifies as Hawaiian or Pacific Islander. This distribution of race/ethnicity doesn’t represent the diversity of our communities according to the census data. The CAM board will work with future curators to make them aware of the diversity of our communities.
Demographics of LGBTQ+ Identification: CAM Board
The current volunteer CAM Board consists of 9 members. As you can see in the chart to the right, currently the board has 6 members (66.6%) who identify as cis-hetero (heterosexual and gender matches that assigned at birth) and 3 members (33.3%) who identify as LGBTQ+. As the CAM Board, we are committed to advocating further for the voices of LGBTQ+ individuals and resist the cultural tendency to marginalize these perspectives.
Demographics of LGBTQ+ Identification: CAM Perennial Curators
The CAM Perennial Exhibition was held for the first time in 2012 and has hosted 10 curators in that time. As you can see in the chart to the right, we’ve had 7 (70%) curators identify as cis-hetero (heterosexual and gender matches that assigned at birth) and 3 (30%) curators identify as LGBTQ+. As a board, we are committed to advocating for the voices of LGBTQ+ curators and resist the cultural tendency to marginalize these perspectives.
Demographics of LGBTQ+ Identification: CAM Perennial Artists
Each year the CAM Board selects a curator who chooses artists for the Perennial Exhibition. When we look at the demographics of sexual and romantic orientation we see that the Perennial Exhibition has featured 75.5% heteronormative artists, 12.1% LGBTQ+ artists, and 12.1% of artists who preferred not to answer. We don’t believe that this distribution of sexual and romantic Orientation represents the diversity of our communities and the CAM board will work with future curators to make them aware of the diversity of our communities.
Demographics of Gender: CAM Board
The current Volunteer Board consists of 9 members. As you can see in the chart to the right, currently we have 7 board members who identify as female (77.7%) and 2 who identify as male (22.2%). We also acknowledge that we do not currently have anyone serving on our board who identifies as non-binary and this is an area of necessary growth.
Demographics of Gender: CAM Perennial Curators
The CAM Perennial Exhibition was held for the first time in 2012 and has hosted 10 curators in that time. As you can see in the chart to the right, we’ve hosted 6 curators who identify as female (60%) and 4 curators who identify as male (40%). We also acknowledge that we have not had any curators who identify as non-binary and this is an area of necessary growth.
Demographics of Gender: CAM Perennial Artists
Each year the CAM Board selects a curator who chooses artists for the Perennial Exhibition. When we look at the demographics of gender we see that the Perennial Exhibition has featured 64.6% female artists, 35.3% male artists, and no none-binary artists. We don’t believe that the lack of representation of non-binary artists represents the diversity of our communities and the CAM board will work with future curators to make them aware of this lack of representation.
