Artist Statement:

This exhibit shows, for the first time, the products of an art project that explores the iconography of Superman as an avatar and metaphor for American heroism and exceptionalism.  The project began with a fundamental research question about how we, as human beings, negotiate or reconcile our desire for and identity as the heroic with the reality of our mortality, our frailty, and our penchant for error.   The image of Superman was an obvious choice, as he represents many aspects of American idealism and identity, such as democracy, capitalism, moral fortitude, “truth, justice, and the American way.” We project him onto the rest of the world as an American savior and claim him as our own. But our understanding and expectation of American heroism and of Superman must be tempered with the fact that he is a fiction; created by the sons of Jewish Immigrants; conceived in a time when justice, strength, and heroism meant different things that what they do now.  Is he an accurate his representation of who and what we are?  Do we do justice to who he is?
