The Really Good Stuff by Israel Medina.

  • Brick at Blue Star Arts Complex 108 Blue Star San Antonio, TX, 78204 United States (map)

FOCO artist studio residency and Brick Gallery presents the first 2022 artist residency exhibition The Really Good Stuff by Israel Medina. This exhibition explores the seemingly essential involvement of alcohol in any given event, especially a celebratory one. The usage of humor, metaphors and Mexican symbols of celebration paint a nuanced picture that mimics the subliminal. “Alcohol has a distinct utility that allows you to lower your defenses, making you more susceptible to revealing an almost "truer" version of oneself. It’s challenging to express concern for somebody with what you believe to be a. problem, with what you believe to be glutton. Doing so means confronting the unpalatable, uncomfortable truth that the role of alcohol isn't consistent for everyone”.

About FOCO Artist Studio Residency at Brick Focused On Creative Opportunity, FOCO is an artist residency created to provide artists the opportunity to grow, engage and network with others within their community. Open to all artists locally, in the San Antonio area, selected artists will be provided a studio space to produce new work. The artists in residence will be given two months access to the Brick Gallery to create and explore new concepts within their own artistic practice. At the end of their residency cycle, the artist will have a solo show to open on the first Friday of the month following the end of the residency. FOCO was started in 2020 by artist Jose Villalobos, the program was first housed at Clamp Light Artist Studios and Gallery, where he offered artists his own studio space for them to work. Seeking to expand and grow, FOCO has found a new home at Brick. Brick is nestled in the middle of Blue Star Arts Complex. Originally part of the farmland belonging to the Mission San Antonio DE Valero (popularly known as The Alamo), the King William neighborhood was settled in the 1860s by German immigrants, who built many of the large historic homes still in the area today. In 1968, the city designated King William as its first Historic Neighborhood.
