“SOUL SUPPORT,” work by noted Texas Outsider artist, Ike Morgan

  • Space C7 2450 Roosevelt Avenue San Antonio, TX, 78210 United States (map)

Space C7, in association with Intuitive Eye is proud to present “SOUL SUPPORT,” an exhibition of work by noted Texas Outsider artist, Ike Morgan.  Co-curator of the exhibit, Jay Wehnert, Director of Intuitive Eye, and author of Outsider Art in Texas: Lone Stars, is a longtime supporter of Ike Morgan’s and has been, along with artist Jim Pirtle and gallerists Bruce and Julie Webb of Webb Gallery, instrumental in the artistic career of Morgan.  This marks the first solo show of Ike Morgan’s work in San Antonio.

Here is Wehnert speaking about Morgan’s life and work:

“Ike Morgan has the soul of an artist. His creativity and art have been fundamental to his life. Born in Rosedale, Texas in 1958, Ike grew up in and around Austin. His early years of abandonment and alienation led to his institutionalization at Austin State Hospital in 1977, where he would remain for the next twenty-three years.  While there, Ike Morgan emerged as an artist. Using materials and supplies scavenged from the trash and the hospital’s arts and craft program, he developed an immersive and relentless creative life. His subjects reflected his keen interests in history, nature and popular culture. Morgan’s self-taught art demonstrates his essential creative mastery. His uncanny use of line and color to capture and convey emotion is powerful and palpable. What radiates directly from his art to the viewer is the energy and intensity at the core of the artist himself.”

The works presented in this exhibition were created in the late 1980’s, a period of particularly bold expression in Ike Morgan’s art. Today, no longer institutionalized, Ike Morgan continues to create in the traditions of art brut and outsider art. He pursues his art in relative solitude, free from the confines of the art world and the influences of its institutions. Ike Morgan lives in Waco, Texas.
