Curator Statement:
The art exhibition reveals a compelling storyline as prominent women artists from San Antonio bring to life the intricate tapestry of Mexican Folk Art by exploring an enigmatic papier-mâché doll with various aliases. Artists will breathe vitality into the diverse tales of this doll, affectionately known as the 'Lupita Doll,' boldly as the 'Puta Doll,' or traditionally as the 'Muñeca de Carton.' Held within the historic walls that once whispered secrets of the Red-Light District, this moving exhibition seamlessly blends cultural narratives, symbolism, and Mexican folklore surrounding the cherished handmade marvel.
Through a vibrant array of expressive paintings, thought-provoking sculptures, and immersive multimedia installations, each artist contributes a distinctive voice to a captivating symphony of perspectives. They delve into the multifaceted identity of the doll, intricately weaving it with the unspoken legacy embedded within the historic walls of the exhibition venue on Guadalupe Street.
